Smith, T. (2026) Art and Design.’ In Aggleton, J (ed), Developing Subject Knowledge in the Foundation Subjects. London: Sage.

My chapter explores how Art and Design curricula can be developed, interpreted and delivered, advocating for Art and Design as a valuable subject at the heart of developing children’s creativity, curiosity, confidence and understanding of themselves and the world. It includes information on the complex relationships and connections the subject has: to others, to a dynamic knowledge base, to the past, to the present and to the future; and it offers guidance to educators on providing inclusive spaces where children’s art knowledge and skills can flourish.
